With Christmas just around the corner, Shanghai is already filled with festive cheer. Shopping malls, hotels, and plazas are all decorated with stunning Christmas trees, and some even feature Santa Claus and a variety of Christmas decorations. You can even bring the Christmas spirit home – it's the best way to get into the holiday mood.
So, where can you pick up a Christmas tree and decorations? Besides online options like Taobao and Pinduoduo, there are also physical stores where you can buy trees. But what's the difference?
On online platforms such as Taobao, prices are much lower, starting at under 100 yuan (about US$13.72), but you'll be getting an artificial tree. You won't have to worry about it wilting or any other issues that can come with a real tree during delivery, however.
If you prefer a real tree, physical stores are your best bet. They're a bit more expensive, but if you're good at bargaining, you can still score a great deal.
Here's a list of a few places where you can grab a tree and some decorations. If you're interested, it's a good idea to shop now before the Christmas rush!
Hongqiao Bird and Flower Market
Hongqiao Bird and Flower Market is massive – around 23,000 square meters – and it's easily the largest, most diverse, and most popular flower market in Minhang District. It's super affordable, offering great value for money, and is just a 10-minute walk from Korea Town.
The market is divided into four main sections: flowers, plants, aquariums, and potted plants. Walking through it feels like stepping into a Monet painting. It's also one of the best places in Shanghai to get your hands on a Christmas tree. You'll find a huge selection of Christmas trees, decorations, and figurines – everything you need to deck out your home for the holidays. Whether you're buying a tree, picking up some festive decor, or just soaking in the Christmas spirit, this place has it all. Some shops even offer Christmas-themed flowers.
It's recommended to start in Area A. Enter through Exit A2, and you'll immediately find some of the most popular Christmas photo spots. This area is filled with shops selling Christmas trees, giving you plenty of time to browse and find the perfect one. It feels like walking into a mini forest.
Prices vary – big trees (1 to 2 meters high) can run you 1,000 to 2,000 yuan, while smaller ones may be only a few hundred yuan.
You can check out stalls such as Stall A46 which offers a wide selection of Christmas trees and decorations, with prices ranging from 100 to 200 yuan for smaller trees, and 500 to 1000 yuan for larger ones. Advent wreaths are priced between 100 and 300 yuan, depending on the size.
Insider tip: Bargaining is totally a thing here. Don't be shy to negotiate with the vendors, and if one shop doesn't work for you, there are plenty of others to check out. You're sure to find something that fits your budget.
One last thing: Most shops are cool with photos, but some only allow you to take pictures at the entrance, not inside with people.

Shuang Ji Flower Market
This is another sizable indoor market for flowers and birds. While it's not as large as Hongqiao, it offers a great variety of items. Prices aren't displayed, so it's best to ask around and compare offers from different shops.
The market is divided into three main sections - flowers, potted plants, and pets. If you're hunting for Christmas trees or decorations, head to the flower section. While there are fewer shops here than in Hongqiao, the prices tend to be a bit higher. But if you live in Pudong and Hongqiao feels too far, it's definitely worth checking out.
This year, the market will also host an online live-streaming event where you can virtually visit three different shops. The vendors will showcase trending Christmas floral arrangements and share tips on creating a cozy holiday corner at home.
Live-streaming time: December 21, 12pm-1pm
