Well, here's the lowdown on how to legally get your foreign-registered car driving in Shanghai:

First up, Who is Eligible to Bring Their Cars from Abroad?

Foreign owned/registered cars can hit the road in China if they're here for organized events like:

• Tourism, competitions, or other official exchanges.
  
• Operating within border areas (specific range applies).
  
• Covered by international transport agreements China has signed.
  

Even Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan cars can join the fun!

Is there a Checklist for Registering?

Forms: Grab your "Temporary Entry Vehicle License" application form at registration (see below for locations to complete registration in Shanghai).

Car Papers: Bring the overseas car registration proof (with a Chinese translation).

Customs Clearance: Get entry approval from Chinese Customs.

Event Proof: Bring the necessary documents if tied to an official event.

Safety Inspection: Vehicles must pass safety checks (Six-year-old or newer non-commercial cars are exempt).

Insurance: Proof of coverage for the duration of your visit.

What's the "When and Where" for Registering my Foreign Car?

Register within two days of entry.

License plates must be valid up to three months.
