An episode of "The Forever Walk China," which chronicles two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and National Geographic explorer Paul Salopek's trek through China, was screened for students of Shanghai New York University on July 2.
There are three episodes in the series' first season.
Salopek's China odyssey, which began in September 2021, is part of his ambitious 38,000-kilometer expedition "Out of Eden Walk," which began in Ethiopia in January 2013 and will end at South America's southernmost tip.
Salopek's journey retraces our ancestors' ancient foot journey around the world.
In the first series of "The Forever Walk China," the documentary follows Salopek's travels from southwest Tengchong in Yunnan Province to Ya'an in Sichuan Province.
It captures China's varied and diversified cultures, magnificent landscapes, folk traditions and arts, socioeconomic progress, and people's kindness and friendliness as he hikes through rainforests and snowy mountains.
It has aired on Dragon TV and Docu TV and is available for viewing in more than 170 countries and areas covered by National Geographic.
After traveling through Shaanxi, Hebei, Liaoning, Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces, Salopek will end his China trip at the country's northern border with Russia.
Zhu Xiaoqian, the chief producer who is also deputy director of Shanghai Media Group's Documentary Center, said Salopek's global hiking is an unparalleled endeavor, and there was no comprehensive visual record of his trek until he entered China.
"Due to various uncertainties during his trip, it posed a great challenge to the production crew but also forced us to reconnect to the essence of the documentary, which is authenticity and vividness."
Production work on the second season of the series has already begun. It is expected to be ready by the end of the year and will be available on Dragon TV, Docu TV, and National Geographic channels.
