Shanghai's Pudong airport already tops 10-million traveler milestone for 2025

Shanghai Pudong International Airport just hit a major milestone: over 10 million travelers have passed through it this year, a 24 percent jump from last year.

With a single-day record of 122,000 passengers, Pudong is flying high as China's busiest international airport — and showing no signs of slowing down.

More than 1.14 million passengers breezed through on 24-hour visa-free transit, helping the airport flex its muscles as a true global hub.

Foreign Travelers Are Loving It

Thanks to expanded visa-free rules and the new 240-hour transit policy, international visitors are pouring in.

Since January, Pudong has welcomed 1.39 million foreigners — a 49 percent annual increase. South Koreans, Japanese, and Thais are leading the pack. Over half of all foreign arrivals now skip the visa hassle entirely.

"This 240-hour visa-free deal saved me a ton of time and money on getting a visa," said Greg David, a British traveler here for business.

Chinese Travelers Are Flying Out Too

It's not just inbound traffic. Nearly 6.6 million Chinese mainland travelers have headed abroad through Pudong this year, mostly to favorite spots like Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Thailand.

"Visa-free, cheaper flights, fast-track lanes — travel feels like a breeze now," said Wang, jetting off to Singapore with his family.

More immigration inspection lanes and quicker queues are keeping waits under 30 minutes for travelers.

Making It Smoother, Smarter, Faster

To handle the passenger boom, Pudong's immigration team has gone full throttle: more inspection lanes, quicker queues (keeping waits under 30 minutes), and multilingual officers on standby to help foreign guests feel right at home.

After all, nothing says "welcome to China" like getting you through the airport without breaking a sweat.
