Hai Pai Art Museum in Minhang District has a new exhibition on display through May 28.
Organized by the museum and Culture and Tourism Office of Minhang District, the exhibition has 220 artworks created by 112 artists. It is divided into four sections: "New Ink and Wash at Sea," "New Expressions in Painting," "New Interface in the Academy" and "Constructing New Time and Space."
Ranging from traditional Chinese ink-wash painting to oil painting, print and sculpture, the exhibition includes not only veteran artists, but young artists as well who are breaking from the traditions of China's classic art genres.
Aiming to reflect a kaleidoscope of the contemporary art scene through various art forms, the exhibition poses a series of questions to visitors – What's "new" about New Ink Painting? Is Western easel painting compatible with classical Chinese symbols? How does a unique sculpture exhibition interpret life through space?
The highlight of the exhibition is a "jungle" of sculptures. This is a reversal of the stereotypical "sculpture + painting" mode.
