Xu Xiaoguo's solo exhibition at Long Museum

"Starlight 22," oil on canvas

Xu Xiaoguo's solo-exhibition "Las Ruinas Circulares" is on display at Long Museum West Bund through the end of March.

The title of the exhibition may sound a bit bizarre, but it is taken from the short story "Las Ruinas Circulares" (1940) of the Argentine world-renowned writer Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986).

As the artist reveals that the writer has a seminal influence on his art renderings.

"I read the novel several years ago. The blaze and the magician described in this story led me to realize that there is a transcendent force in the universe, governing the infinite circular processes of time and space," Xu said.

Born in 1977 in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, Xu graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts in 2000. His works involve painting, pictures, video, sound and other art forms.

Xu belongs to the post-70 generation whose personal growth and fate are closely linked with the dramatic changes in society and the art world in the past two decades.

His initial work consists of large-scale narrative paintings fused with myth and reality. He then pursued the expression of reality from the ontological depth of painting.

His tableau shies away from the realistic depiction, but rather, blurred with metaphoric expressions of starlight, flowers and cages to convey his art concepts.

The exhibition includes the three series of the artist created from 2015 to 2025.
