The "8th John Moores Painting Prize (China) Exhibition" is now on at both the Shanghai Jiushi Art Museum and the Bund 18 Jiushi Art Gallery and will run through May 12.
The exhibition features 100 acclaimed and shortlisted works in various mediums, including oil, acrylic, ink, watercolor, printmaking, and mixed media, reflecting the creative and innovative power of contemporary Chinese painting.
Since its establishment in 2018, the John Moores Painting Prize (China) has been witness to the pursuit of Chinese artists in contemporary painting.
"Existence No.13," Liu Zequn, ink on rice-paper
This year's competition received a total of 2,075 submissions from across the country, representing an increase of approximately 20 percent compared to 2022, with over 70 percent of participants being artists born in the 1980s or later.
The six winners were: Liu Zequn, Wang Shuzhong, Lin Zhaole, Xu Hanzhuo, Li Liqin, and Sun Yuan.
"These paintings have been selected from thousands of submissions from all over China," said Lewis Biggs, chair of the 8th John Moores Painting Prize (China) Jury. "The John Moores Painting Prize is unique among art competitions in focusing on singular artworks. The international jury looked only for quality: there is no theme or criterion for selection applied to the paintings, which are submitted anonymously."
"Birdsong in Valley," Li Liqin, acrylic on paper
"The Allegory of the Group No. 78," Sun Yuan, ink on paper
Simon Groom, one of the judges and director of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Scottish National Gallery, commented: "These diverse and rich paintings demonstrate the vibrant energy and dynamic vitality of contemporary Chinese painting."
This year's inaugural "Contemporary Ink Award" marks a significant milestone in promoting the contemporary transformation of traditional painting mediums.
For example, Sun Yuan's "The Allegory of the Group" decodes collective consciousness through ink symbols, reflecting the dilemmas of existence.
