Shanxi's cultural items are on display.

If you are a fan of blockbuster video game "Black Myth: Wukong" or an enthusiast of China's ancient architecture, don't miss an exhibition on Shanghai's iconic Nanjing Road Pedestrian Mall!

"Seeing · The Contours of History," an ancient architecture culture exhibition, runs through February 13.

The ancient architecture of north China's Shanxi Province became wildly popular in 2024 due to the game "Black Myth: Wukong" and triggered a tourism boom across the province.

The exhibition uses Shanxi ancient architecture photography as the core carrier, combined with wooden ancient building restoration models and Shanxi's cultural and creative products, to create an ancient architecture cultural experience space.

It features a 1:20 scale wooden model of the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda and photographic works taken at different scenic spots in Shanxi, revealing the unique charm and beauty of Shanxi's ancient architecture and the history behind it.

These include various attractions such as Foguang Temple, a surviving Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907) temple on Wutai Mountain and Xiaoxitian, where the Daxiong Hall features stunning 400-year-old suspended sculptures.

Visitors will also find the "Twenty-Eight Mansions" surrounding the exhibition hall and explore the history and stories of iconic attractions like Xuankong Temple and Guandi Temple.

For years, Shanxi's national treasures remained largely unexplored, particularly the temples and towers tucked away in the south. However, the province boasts a wealth of Buddhist art, rivaling the treasures of Dunhuang.

With more than1,000 years of history and known as the "treasure trove of ancient Chinese architecture," Shanxi boasts 531 nationally protected cultural heritage sites, accounting for 10.5 percent of the country's total — the highest in China.

"Black Myth: Wukong" has ignited a new wave of interest in Shanxi. Inspired by the classic novel "Journey to the West," the game features numerous real-life landmarks from the province.

"Black Myth: Wukong" was filmed at 36 scenic spots in China, with up to 27 locations in Shanxi.
