"The Annoyance of the Gods," a light-hearted stage production based on the novel by award-winning Chinese writer Ma Boyong, has begun its national tour of cities that include Shanghai and Beijing.
On January 15, the play's national debut at the Shanghai Grand Theater received wide acclaim from both audiences and critics and achieved high scores and rave reviews online. The performances in Shanghai will run through January 18.
Directed by Liu Tianchi, the play applies the literary classic "Journey to the West" as a backdrop to portray a series of modern-day workplace issues and challenges.
With credits of "The Longest Day in Chang'an" and "The Wind Blows From Longxi," Ma reconstructs the story of "Journey to the West" from a new perspective and interprets the modern workplace's tactics and skills in a humorous way.
The play gathers performers from different artistic backgrounds, such as film and TV actors, comedians, talk show performers, Peking Opera and dance performers.
Liu encouraged them to explore the inner world of the characters and resonate with the audience through genuine emotions.
Li Jing, director of Damai's "Theater Rocks" program, said they were honored to participate in the production with so many excellent theater professionals.
"The play has rich cultural connotation from the literature classic, and a connection and resonance with ordinary people's work and life," Li added.
