One part of the Japanese film exhibition is a retrospective show of the famous Hokkaido-born director Sho Miyake.
The Shanghai Film Art Federation will host a Japanese film exhibition from April 11 to 20 at the Shanghai Film Art Center to mark the 45th year of the establishment of friendship ties and sister city relations between Osaka and Shanghai.
The exhibition is divided into two parts. One part is a retrospective exhibition of the famous Hokkaido-born Japanese director Sho Miyake. The other is an exhibition of classic Japanese movies in restored versions.
The two parts will allow audiences to experience the different charm brought by modern-day productions and classic works. Director Miyake will also be in Shanghai to interact with movie fans.
Representative works of Sho Miyake will be displayed at the film exhibition.
"Good for Nothing" is the feature film directorial debut of Sho Miyake.
"Playback" is a drama film about an actor in his 40s.
Miyake's acclaimed drama and documentary short films, as well as his two feature-length movies — "Good for Nothing" (2010) and "Playback" (2012) will be screened.
Set in Hokkaido, "Good for Nothing," Miyake's feature film directorial debut, centers on three teenage boys who are on the verge of graduating from high school and start working at a security guard agency. Their life moments and confusion about the future are depicted in monochrome.
"Playback" tells the story of an actor in his 40s who returns to his hometown to attend a wedding, but finds himself transported back to his high school days due to a car accident. Miyake uses non-linear narrative, blurs the boundaries between reality and fantasy and presents a new way of examining past life experiences.
"High and Low" is a classic film by Akira Kurosawa.
"Sanjuro," directed by Akira Kurosawa, will also be screened.
Japanese director Morita Yoshimitsu's "And Then" is a romantic film based on a novel by Soseki Natsume.
Classics by celebrated Japanese filmmakers like Akira Kurosawa and Morita Yoshimitsu will also be shown. Among them are "Sanjuro" (1962), "High and Low" (1963), "And Then" (1985), and "Haru" (1996).
All these films won acclaim at international film festivals. They also provide an insight into the culture, people and society of Japan at varied periods of time.
