Music lovers are in for a cinematic and musical treat on November 9 at FANCL Arts Center with the arrival of The Faust Silent Film Concert: Echoes Across a Century.
Composed by the film score master Roberto Fiore, the Faust Silent Film Live Music Concert first stunned audiences during its 2008 debut in Italy. After 16 years of refinement, this multimedia spectacle blending orchestral music, electronic soundscapes, and visual arts makes a thrilling comeback to Shanghai in a brand new form.
This time, Fiore has re-edited F.W. Murnau's classic silent film Faust while conducting the Nova Orchestra. This daring fusion of live orchestral music, synchronized video projection, and electronic elements pushes the boundaries between music and visual art.
This musical composition is divided into six chapters, each with its own unique theme and distinctive musical style. It blends a wide range of musical elements and sound designs, offering an entirely new form of expression. The music is tightly integrated with scenes from the 1926 film, supported by meticulously crafted sound effects to create an unprecedented experience.
Supported by Shanghai's Nova Orchestra – a dynamic ensemble of internationally acclaimed musicians – the music weaves through the film's scenes, delving into Faust's struggle with knowledge, power, and redemption.
To create this multimedia masterpiece, Fiore integrates modern elements such as orchestral music and electronics, introducing a contemporary auditory style distinct from traditional film scores.
Fiore says the dramatic nature of this silent film provided the "perfect canvas" for musical creation, offering fertile ground for the symbiosis between sound and imagery.
