Liu Haisu Art Museum and Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts are presenting a dual exhibition of famous artists Chen Jialing and Gu Wenda.
The exhibition highlights the continuity and collision between tradition and modernity through a series of artworks.
The 88-year-old Chen has made several new artistic explorations in the past decade.
Chinese calligraphy art has been applied and rejuvenated by Chen as an element of painting. It is also an attempt of the artist to seek the transformation possibilities of traditional Chinese arts in the new era.
Gu, meanwhile, brings the "Journey to the West" ink-and-wash painting series and an installation from his well-known artwork titled "The United Nations."
The artwork has been well-received for 30 years. Gu collected human hair from around the world to create it.
With the universal language of art, Gu has never ceased his exploration in Chinese contemporary art.
According to curator Shi Mo, it is the fourth year they have introduced the distinct art styles and achievements of excellent contemporary artists through duo exhibition.
"Shanghai has provided convenience and favorable external conditions for the development of a mature contemporary art system," said Shi. "We will continue to encourage artistic originality and improve the mechanism for talent cultivation."
