The "Clouds and Mist on Paper" special exhibition, commemorating the 400th anniversary of the birth of Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) calligrapher Shen Quan, will run through to March at the Qingpu District Museum.
It features 40 sets of precious works by Shen and his friends and relatives.
Shen (1624-1684), was born in a prestigious cultural family in Jiangnan, and was a descendant of the famous Ming Dynasty calligrapher Shen Can.
Shen's journey in calligraphy left a profound family cultural heritage, and integrated his unique artistic insights and innovative spirit.
Shen's calligraphy was not confined to the methods of the predecessors but drew on the strengths of many others, gradually forming his own unique artistic style.
His regular script works have a sparse and open layout, with a peaceful and upright spirit revealed between the lines.
This unique artistic charm made him famous during the reign of Emperor Kangxi (1654-1722), becoming one of the most important calligraphers of the time. He was appointed as Kangxi's own calligraphy substitute.
Shen Quan's talent was not limited to the field of calligraphy. In poetry, he also has outstanding achievements.
