The Borodin Quartet, a world-class chamber music group celebrating its 80th anniversary, will perform the classic repertoire of Borodin, Shostakovich and Dvorak during an "extra-long" concert at Shanghai Oriental Art Center on May 10.

The Borodin Quartet is one of the few string quartets in the world that has never been interrupted since its establishment.

The Borodin Quartet is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year.

Established in 1945 at the Moscow Conservatory (now the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory), the orchestra has experienced turbulent and stable periods, but has always maintained a coherent and unified artistic style.

The four current members are Nikolai Sachenko, Sergei Lomovsky, Vladimir Balshin and Igor Naidin.

When talking about the artistic journey of the Borodin Quartet, one name cannot be avoided – Shostakovich.

The composer created 15 string quartets in his lifetime, most of which were communicated and discussed with members of the Borodin Quartet at the beginning of their creation. The orchestra also received personal guidance and opinions from the composer himself.

At the concert in Shanghai, the current quartet will open with Borodin's most representative work "String Quartet No. 2 in D Major," a passionate work dedicated by the composer to his wife.

It will be followed by the quartet's forte, Shostakovich's "String Quartet No. 1 in C Major."

Pianist Andrey Pisarev will then join the performance to present Shostakovich's "Piano Quintet in G Minor" and Dvorak's "Piano Quintet in A Major," bringing the audience a collision of two styles and two national temperaments.
