A foreign visitor takes a photo at the 120th Anniversary of the Birth of Chinese Film Poster Exhibition at Xiangyang Park, which was later moved to the Hunan Subdistrict Culture Center.
A series of activities that blend culture, art and films is being rolled out in Shanghai's downtown Xuhui District, offering a feast for the eyes and ears.
The 120 activities of 12 series involving films, music, reading, art and tourism will cover more than 40 public venues and run through the end of this year.
Among these are an array of activities commemorating the 120th anniversary of the birth of Chinese films.
Xuhui, as one of the birthplaces of China's "century-long film" culture, has a deep film cultural heritage. It is home to cinema landmarks such as the Shanghai Film Studio and the Shanghai Film Museum, a concentration of the former residences of movie celebrities, and numerous film shooting locations.
Xuhui is hosting a series of film-related and art activities.
The Shanghai Film Museum will launch classic film screenings, and a special show of the 4K-restored version of "Goddess" (1934) by Ruan Lingyu, the most celebrated actress of Chinese cinema in the 1930s, with symphony accompaniment. It will be specially premiered on May 18 at the museum, marking "International Museum Day."
The "Special Exhibition Celebrating the 120th Anniversary of the Birth of Chinese Films" will open at the museum in September. The exhibition will be the largest in scale and with the most exhibits since the museum opened.
The Yangtze River Delta A Cappella Music Competition, concerts at parks, pop-up and other activities are also scheduled.
The 120th Anniversary of the Birth of Chinese Film Poster Exhibition is being held at the culture center of Hunan subdistrict. It has carefully selected film works from the silent film era of the early days of cinema to today's diverse movie types, like a time tunnel, leading people to experience the brilliant century-long light and shadow show of Chinese films.
March of the Volunteers, an original Chinese opera jointly produced by the Shanghai Opera House and the Xuhui District Culture and Tourism Bureau, will celebrate the official opening of the West Bund Theater in late April.
The film poster exhibition portrays the history of Chinese films.
Moreover, beyond the beautiful cherry blossom avenue, a grand musical event is about to unfold at the West Bund.
The 2025 Jazz Spring Festival will resonate along the Xuhui riverside from April 30 to May 5, featuring six performances by top-tier artists and an amazing lineup.
Among these, Chinese singer Li Quan will join six of China's most influential jazz musicians and rising jazz newcomers, weaving together classical, pop and jazz elements for the James Li & JZ All Stars Jazz Concert.
China's top jazz orchestra, the JZ Big Band, will present Woody Allen's Jazz Od – A Special Concert, taking the audience on a journey through Woody Allen's romantic universe with passionate and improvisational notes.
The Ultrasonic Journey: Colors of the World and When Tchaikovsky Meets Jazz – Zhihan Xu Jazz Orchestra Concert will also be held during the festival.
