An exhibition about Meng Guang and his students

"The Era of Meng Guang – A Special Art Exhibition of Teacher and Students" is underway at the Liu Haisu Art Museum through August 20.

"This is an exhibition that cost 15 years," said Bao Weihua, director of the Liu Haisu Art Museum. "However, with the support of Meng's students, it is finally unveiled to the public."

Even for some local art lovers, Meng Guang (1921-1996) is not a familiar name.

Born in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, Meng is from the same hometown as Liu Haisu (1896-1994), one of the heavyweight names in China's modern art history.

Meng also graduated from the Shanghai Training School of Fine Arts founded by Liu Haisu, and inherited Liu's education concept and art spirit.

"Meng's friendship with Liu, plus his connection with the Shanghai Training School of Fine Arts, initiated this exhibition at Liu Haisu Art Museum," Bao explained.

Throughout his life time, Meng worked hard in the area of art education and nurtured a group of distinguished artists of tomorrow, including Chen Yifei, Xia Baoyuan and Chen Weide.

The exhibition features a cluster of sketches and canvases created by Meng and his students.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to see the film "Sketch," written and directed by Meng in 1979. The film had a wide and profound impact on public art education in the country, vividly demonstrating the sketching teaching system summed up by Meng.

Meng dedicated himself to his young students and guided them in the art world. Those students regarded him as their lifelong mentor, calling the years they spent with him "The Era of Meng Guang."
